Pulled pork is a tender, flavorful dish that’s perfect for sandwiches, tacos, or as a standalone meal. This recipe includes an oven method and an air fryer option for a quick and delicious outcome.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds pork shoulder or pork butt

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon cumin

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ cup barbecue sauce (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Pork: Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder. Pat it dry with paper towels.

Season the Pork: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Rub the pork thoroughly with olive oil, then coat it with the seasoning mixture, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.

Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the seasoned pork in a roasting pan, cover tightly with aluminum foil, and roast for 4-5 hours, or until the meat is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.

Air Fryer Method: Preheat your air fryer to 300°F (150°C). Place the seasoned pork in the air fryer basket or tray. Cook for 2-3 hours, flipping every 30 minutes and checking for doneness. Add a small amount of water or stock to the tray to keep the pork moist if needed.

Shred the Pork: Once cooked, let the pork rest for 15 minutes. Use two forks to shred the meat.

Add Sauce: Toss the shredded pork with barbecue sauce if desired for added flavor.

Serve: Serve the pulled pork on buns, in tacos, over rice, or as a main dish with coleslaw and cornbread.

Tips for Perfect Pulled Pork

  • Slow Cooking: Low and slow is key for tender, flavorful pulled pork.

  • Moisture: If using the air fryer, periodically check the pork to ensure it doesn’t dry out. Adding a small amount of liquid to the bottom of the tray can help.

  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

This pulled pork recipe is versatile and easy to prepare, delivering smoky, savory flavors that pair well with a variety of dishes. Try it in the oven or air fryer for a satisfying meal!
